Review: Smolt, Hobart, Tasmania

Smolt is one of Hobart's top-rated restaurants, and with good reason. We stopped in on our first night in the city, were served and seated promptly and cheerfully, and lingered over a wonderful dinner for the next few hours.

Tucked away along the famous Salamanca Square, along with dozens of other eateries, Smolt has made a name for itself with its fresh, seasonal menu and unpretentious fit out.

With our first juicy bottle of red ordered, we start eating in earnest.
Extensive wine list available for all palates and price ranges
Tassal salmon ceviche - dressed with citrus, olive oil, shallots and herbs and served with toasty warm bread ($15.90)
The insanely fresh Oyster Plate - selection of 6 jumbo, normal and micro oysters ($21.90)
Succulent rabbit with baby onions, prune and shallot chutney, fresh lardon, confit kipfler potatoes , swede and sage ($36)

The day's special - a beautifully braised and tender lamb atop roast garlic mash
Smolt is an exceptionally great restaurant for large groups with its tapas-style dishes, and even for couples who just want to kick back and people-watch. From the fresh seafood to the meaty mains and efficient service, it has certainly deserved its excellent reputation!
